Phato Zone

Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India and one of the oldest in the world. It is a protected area in the Himalayan foothills.

Jim Corbett National Park is divided into four zones:

  • The core zone - This zone has no human activity, and protects wildlife from poaching like Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna , Dhela, Garjiya, Durgadevi and Phato Zone.
  • The buffer zone - This zone is a transition between human settlements and the core zone. Activities like hiking and camping are allowed with permission from forest authorities like Sitabani Zone.
  • The tourism zone - This zone has hotels, resorts, restaurants, trekking trails and other facilities for visitors like Dhikuli, Kyari.
  • The peripheral or buffer zones - These zones are around 10 km away from the park's boundary like Ramnagar.

    Phato zone is a dense forest zone in Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, India. It is also known as the Terai-Duar savanna and grasslands ecoregion. Phato zone is home to many animals including Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian leopards, Asian Elephant, sloth bears, wild boars, sambar and chital deer.

  • Phato zone have various kind of birds like Grey hornbill, Kalij Pheasant, Great Hornbill, Ruddy shelduck, River lapwing, Crested kingfisher, Drongos etc.
  • It also houses one of the tallest trees in India - the Shisham tree.

    • Nights stay at Phato zone- Tree Houses or FRH.

    In Phato zone visitors have a option of two type of stay- Tree house or Forest Rest House. The Tree house package offers accommodation at tree houses whereas Forest package offers accommodation inside rooms which is in the forest. In phato zone Govt. is planning to make 04 tree house in future. Now only 01 tree house has build which is open for night stay for visitors from 15 December 2022. Visitors can book Tree house or FRH night stay only offline method.

    • Jeep Safari In Phato Zone

    Jeep Safaris in the Phato zone of Jim Corbett National Park- The Ultimate 4x4 Experience for experience for those who have never done it before. There are plenty of benefits for going on a jeep safari such as seeing wild animals, getting to know the people, learning about their traditions and customs, seeing different landscapes and Grasslands. If you are planning on taking a jeep safari, it is important to remember that it can get cold at night. In order to be prepared, pack some warm clothes and blankets. Be sure to bring water as well as other snacks like protein bars or trail mix. You may also want to bring a hats and binoculars.

  • Phato zone is open for 12 months.
  • In phato zone 50 jeeps are allowed in morning and 50 jeeps in evening.
  • Safari timing in winter is 6.30am to 9.30am and Evening slot 02.00pm to 05.00pm.
  • Safari timing in summer is 06.00am to 09.00am and Evening slot 03.00pm to 06.00pm.
    • Guide is compulsory in phato zone.
